Spirituality: Do We Need To Suffer To Know How To Love?

Author: Nick Arrizza, M.D.

With all of the natural and not so natural catastrophes that many have experienced in the last several years here on the planet there are those who might venture to suggest that "the catastrophes have been a good thing because they has brought many people together into a more loving frame of mind".

They might also argue that "perhaps without such catastrophes we, as a species, would just continue to deteriorate morally, ethically and spiritually and eventually destroy the planet and each other. In other words we would never learn to truly love each other

In effect that's like saying that we need to suffer in order to learn how to love. Well if that's the case we are very fortunate because given the finiteness of the planet and the expanding global population we are in for a great deal of suffering, aren't we?

Perhaps we should be grateful to God, the universe, or who/whatever placed us in such a fortunate situation to learn to become such loving beings. I suppose all of the wars that are taking place on the planet, all having to do with securing these finite resources, should be considered valuable experiments teaching us how to love each other.

If you detected a measure of sarcasm in the last several statements it's likely because you yourself don't really buy into any of it. You see if you did you would have been completely blind to the sarcasm.

So what is there not to buy into? Well if you reflect on what is the true source of those loving feelings you will quickly recognize that it is the heart.

What inspires and draws one to those feelings? Well the feelings themselves and how good they feel when youre immersed in them, correct?

Just notice a beautiful sunset. Hold you beloved in your arms. Embrace a newly born puppy. Smell a beautiful rose. Convey a kind gesture towards a stranger. Listen to a moving peace of music, etc.

All of this quickly evokes powerful and desirable feelings of love. Now in any of that did I mention anything about suffering?

Absolutely not!

If you wish add it in yourself.

See yourself witnessing the death of a loved one, an animal, a stranger, a plant etc.

So do you feel the experience of love in any of those? Hardly!

What do you feel instead? Well most likely some or all of the following: sadness, heaviness, regret, helplessness, hopelessness, a broken heart and so on.

What does this do to the experience of love? Well it buries and even extinguishes it.

So why do individuals persist in their beliefs that suffering is a vehicle to love?

Well it's because they need so explain why the suffering happens to them at all. You see without such an explanation they would feel totally vulnerable and alone, that their God had turned against them, that all of their spiritual beliefs would come into serious question, and all of this would be too frightening to tolerate.

So why not subscribe to a "delusional" belief that gives one a sense of security, albeit a false one? It certainly wouldnt be the first and only one being promulgated here.

There are some of you who after reading this will start to recognize and accept your inner desire to have a greater sense of control over your lives. You may have a desire to stop justifying the suffering and move on from it to a life of inner peace, love and contentment.
