Gratitude - Your True Companion

Author: Matt Garrigan

Gratitude is our true companion. It is the essence of an expanded awakened consciousness.

Gratitude opens us up to possibility.

Kindness, steadfastness, peace, compassion, humility, forgiveness, generosity and all other virtues flow from Gratitude.

The longing for Gratitude can initially lead us on a journey that focuses on the external rather than the internal. The false notion that Gratitude results from external circumstances and things imprisons us. The ensuing compulsion to focus on what is missing in our lives, rather than celebrate what brings us joy, drives us to accumulate more of what we dont needmore things. We develop a strong need to be gratified. This is not Gratitude.

The perception of lack breeds gratification. This choice robs us of a consciousness that cultivates Gratitude, cheerfulness, joy and enthusiasm.

Most human beings are at the effect of gratification.

You do not know your joy because you do not know your own self-fullness.
A Course in Miracles

Gratitude is an inner virtue. Cultivating it spawns a wealth consciousness.

Gratitude is not an event; it is a way of life.

To maintain Gratitude we must welcome all the happenings of our lives. The limited personality mind will tell us that one cannot always be in the realm of Gratitude.

We must ask ourselves these questions:
1) "At what point my life did I decide that cheerfulness and joy are a thing of the past?"
2) "Am I willing to rekindle the flame of Gratitude, cheerfulness, joy, and enthusiasm that lies dormant within?"

Without discipline we are not likely to establish ourselves in the wellspring of soothing, nurturing, and enlivening energies that Gratitude supplies.

Everything in the physical world is subject to change. Relationships, careers, homes, finances, health, and our bodies all change. The changes can range anywhere from gentle to startling. They can be happy or unhappy, welcomed or resisted.

Gratitude is part of the eternal world. If it were a condition based on the external, then any change would diminish it and deprive us of its healing essence.

Building a foundation on that which changes breeds fear, distrust and uncertainty. These are not conducive to cheerfulness and joy.

Our inner nature is the essence of Gratitude. It is unchanging. Our attention is either focused on it, or it isnt.

Daily meditation on Gratitude creates a reservoir of energies that spontaneously support us during the times of emotional chaos or upheaval that we experience.

Creating an inner foundation is essential for each of us. This internal support is cultivated by the thoughts and words we place our attention on.

If you are cynical now and you do not redirect your energy you will be a master at cynicism years from now. The joy and cheerfulness will be something quite alien to you.

Accordingly, if you begin to place your attention on enlivening thoughts and words, you will build a foundation that will spontaneously support you throughout life. Enthusiasm will replace apathy.

Discipline yourself with activities, thoughts, and words that vibrate with your inner essence.

Below is a list of words that you can read daily. You will be amazed at how this can shift your consciousness.

By the time you finish reading it you may find yourself thinking of other words that vibrate at this frequency. You may even find yourself looking back over the list to see if your word is already there. I have. Its contagious.
