Graphic Design Jobs Predicted To Rise Over Seven-Year Period

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, the visual communications industry is growing rapidly. In fact, graphic designers (and those in similar fields) are expected to have the most new jobs available to them through 2014. However, the site warns that job seekers will face steep competition for positions. It goes on to highly recommend that those looking for graphic design employment earn a degree.

What Positions Are Available?

While the area of visual communication is broad, the two positions expected to maintain a high degree of demand include graphic designer and production artist. Let's look at these two occupations more closely.

Graphic Designer - Communicating through visual means, graphic designers relay messages through color, type styles, photography and more. Producing logos, signs and other types of artwork, graphic designers make use of computer programs including PhotoShop, Illustrator and Quark. The work of graphic designers is commonly used on product packaging, brochures, corporate reports, displays and websites.

Production Artist - Similar to a graphic designer, a production artist usually handles the more technical aspects of producing a marketing piece. Taking what the graphic designer has done, a production artist will create camera-ready or plate-ready artwork that is ready for print in newspapers, magazines or others. Production artists may also transfer files from software programs such as Illustrator or PhotoShop to web-ready files such as .jpg or .gif.

According to one Connecticut College, the basic knowledge needed for each position is similar and can be learned in the same degree program in visual communication.

What Education Is Required?

Receiving a degree in visual communication does require a college education. While high school seniors may expect to attend college, many adults may find this prospect a challenge due to current demands on their time. At one Norwalk College, classes are offered at flexible times to allow those who have recently graduated as well as those who are transitioning from one career to another to attend.

Regardless of where you attend school, you might expect your degree program to include graphic design basics and advanced techniques taught through hands-on applications. You will want to ensure the college or university offers training on the most widely used software programs and equipment.

Other Characteristics

Creativity is a must when working in graphic design or production art. In addition, a love of computers and the ability to easily master software programs are traits that lend themselves well to this line of work. Because you may be frequently challenged to look outside the norm and communicate the intended message with only visual means, imagination will be a plus.

While graphic design is not for everyone, those who have a love of art and the technical capabilities to translate their art via graphic means may look forward to an expanding job market for years to come.
